Now that you are ready to move in, you may want to consider purchasing Tenant Insurance.
There are many insurance companies operating in Calgary. A Google search using the following term:
“Calgary tenants insurance”
will reveal many insurance companies. Some examples are: AMA, TD Monex, State Farm, Cooperators. Allstate, and there are many more.
Tenant Insurance (also known as Renters Insurance or Apartment Renters Insurance) provides coverage for your personal belongings in case they are stolen, damaged or destroyed. It also provides financial protection in case you unintentionally injure someone or damage their property while in the apartment.
Renters insurance can also protect you in case someone gets hurt while in your home (for example classmates on play-dates with your children), or if you accidentally damage someone else's property. The insurance is most important in case of a fire, flood and similar situations. For example, if the Tenant caused a fire in the apartment/building, all costs associated with rebuilding would be the Tenant’s responsibility.
If you already possess such insurance remember to update it to the new address.
Your landlord has insurance as well. However, landlord insurance does not cover your belongings if they are stolen, damaged or destroyed.
In situations requiring insurance it is the most advantageous if each party (tenant, landlord, and condo board) have their own separate companies to be insured with. This way you receive the most attention and there is no room for any conflict of interest. Regardless of the insurance company chosen, when necessary all insurance companies collaborate with each other.
